How does CD50 work?
CD50 penetrates deep into any species of timber, protecting the timber from deep within against decay, fungus, mould and termites. It provides water repellency and controls warping, cupping and splitting of the timber.
Will CD50 peel?
As CD50 works deep in the timber and is not a surface film forming product, it will not crack, peel or flake.
I want my timber to age to silver naturally
Treating timber with clear CD50 will give all the advantages above and will allow the timber to silver naturally where it is in direct sunlight.
Alternatively, by using Silvertone or Smokey Grey Colourtone, the timber will be silver from the time of application, and you will avoid the uneven effect of natural silvering. In time, the natural silvering will take over from the effects of the Colourtone.
I want to retain the colour that my timber is now - I do not want it to silver
Use CD50 with the Colourtone of your choice.
My timber has silvered with age/ is dirty/ mouldy - can I get it back to the original colour?
Yes - use the surface active restorative preparation, SARA-CLEAN to clean the surface and restore the natural colour.
If the timber is heavily stained with water stains, tannin stains or grease, use WAY2GO.
Can I use CD50 on shingles?
Yes - CD50 will protect shingles from feathering, splitting, & mould discolouration.
Is CD50 suitable for the harsh sunlight and very high UV levels we have in New Zealand?
CD50 is manufactured in New Zealand for New Zealand conditions. It contains the ultra-violet stable, broad spectrum highly effective fungicide Copper 8 Quinolinolate.
Is CD50 safe to use around children and pets? And is it safe for the environment?
As a liquid, CD50 is very low in toxicity and is rated as a non-hazardous product.
When applied to timber, CD50 has little or no toxicity to mammals and is suitable for use on wood that has incidental contact with food.
Why is it so important that I remove all surface coatings (paints, stains) before using CD50?
CD50 has to penetrate into the timber - it cannot penetrate through some surface coatings.
I don't know if my house has been previously treated with a surface treatment
Take a cup of cold water - go to a protected part of the house where there has been little weathering eg the south side or under the eaves - dip your fingers in the water - flick the water at the timber. If it soaks in, the timber is probably not treated with a surface coating. If the water beads, it probably has a surface treatment.
My house has a surface coating (paint, stain, etc) - how do I remove it?
It is best to get a professional to do this for you - this can be a complex process, using specialised equipment and chemicals. The results can be dramatic, as warped and cupped timbers can be returned to their near original profile, and the original natural colour and beauty of the wood restored. I have been told I can't use CD50 on plywood and LOSP-treated timber
Some pine plywoods have a wax repellant coating. As long as the wax content is less than 2% and the timber has dried after being treated (ie: all the smell has gone and the moisture level is below 17%), then CD50 can be used on Ply and LOSP-treated timber.
If the top layer of the Ply is very thin, contact Churton Pacific before proceeding. DO NOT use CD50 on veneers.
I have been told CD50 will delaminate plywood
CD50 will not delaminate plywood.
Can I use CD50 on decks and outdoor furniture
Yes, Clear CD50 will allow the timber to silver naturally without black & slippery mould and fungus.
If using on new hardwood timber, use very sparingly - alternatively, allow the timber to weather for a few months, as CD50 penetrates better once the natural oils have leached out.
If using a Colourtone - work with the natural colour of the timber. Decks and outdoor furniture are usually placed to receive maximum sun. Accordingly, if a Colourtone is used, the maintenance will be more frequent than that of a normal vertical house surface.
Do I have to put a coat of preservative on first, then several coats of colour?
No - CD50 contains the active ingredients in one mix. If you want a Colourtone, you add this to the mix. It all goes on together. Then you apply the second coat (the same mix)
well after at least four weeks.
How do I use CD50?
CD50 - with or without Colourtone added - is applied to the timber, and a second coat is applied a minimum of four weeks later. Further applications may be required after 2 - 6 years depending on the porosity of the timber, and the exposure to the weather.
CD50 is very easy to apply - it can be sprayed, brushed or rollered on.
Detailed instructions are on the label and must be read thoroughly before use.
Do I have to wait 4 weeks? - I don't want to rehire the scaffolding later
You can apply the second coat before 4 weeks if it has soaked in fairly well (eg if the weather is dry) - but we recommend letting the first coat soak in well before the second coat, as the longer the time between coats, the better the colour retention will be. In humid or cold conditions it is better to wait until after 4 weeks.
I understand that if I use new timber, the retained moisture must be less than 17% - what is retained moisture and how will I know the level?
Retained moisture is the natural sap left in the wood. This must be reduced to below 17% before applying CD50. Your timber merchant can test the timber and tell you how much moisture the timber contains.
